The most recognized of the two is Plaza las Américas, with 1.8 million square foot shopping center located in San Juan, PR. It was opened to the public in 1968, when it had approximately 70 acres of land (excluding the peripheral commercial areas) located at the intersection of what would eventually be the main east, west, north and south highways in San Juan. It is located at 15 minutes from the main airport of San Juan, the Luis Muñoz Marín airport, also close to the convention center and most main hotels in Puerto Rico.
Plaza las Américas has more than 300 stores, including the only Macy’s in the Caribbean, the largest JCPenny in the chain, a Sears and a 327,000 square foot Sears Brand Central, among other stores. Also, the mall offers a 13-screen movie theater, more than 40 dining options at the Food Court Terrace, and other full-service and sit-down restaurants.
Old San Juan is located on a small strip of land which lies in the north coast of Puerto Rico and is united to the island by three bridges. With its two major city’s former Spanish defensive forts called Castillo San Cristobal and Castillo San Felipe del Morro. This city is characterized by its narrows cobblestone streets and flat roofed brick and stone building dating back to the 16th and 17th century, when Puerto Rico was a Spanish possession. There is so much history and architecture to see in Old San Juan that it deserves its own special tour.
The shopping in Old San Juan is another attraction of visitors. You will find jewelers, boutiques, brand-name factory outlet stores and art galleries, as well as souvenir, bargains and t-shirts shops. El Yunque has 3 interpretive pavilions, a theater, a bookstore and a nature trail. It also has several waterfalls, but the most common and required stop is La Coca Falls. There is also the Yocahu Tower, which is a 100-step tower that offers a spectacular view of the hills.
